Dupe

An Exhibition by Adrienne Dixon

November 3—December 1, 2023

McClure Gallery

Opening Reception: Friday, November 3, 2023, 5—8pm

The Art Academy of Cincinnati is pleased to present Dupe, a site-specific art installation by AAC Adjunct Professor Adrienne Dixon (www.adriennedixon.com).

Artist’s Statement About the Exhibition: “Dupe explores the falsehood of the American Dream and the desire to aspire for more materially and socially, in addition to the unsustainability of maintaining this lifestyle. I am exploring these concepts through installations and in my overwhelming use of specific materials that are a by-product of nostalgia, consumption, and yearning. The Blue tarps compose a sky in relation to Ikea bags as buyer consumption, and a band aid for natural disaster. Faux and unobtainable turf are presented as lawns of elite classes in suburbia that break down into pixelated illusive segments as viewers go deeper into the installation. Glowing lights are utilized as a lure to guide onlookers into the space and further contemplate their own consumption habits.”

About the Artist: Adrienne Dixon received her MFA from University of Cincinnati School of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning in Fine Art in 2022, and her BFA in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2011. She has exhibited in a multitude of galleries throughout the United States, including the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati OH, the Carnegie in Covington, KY, University of Kentucky Art Museum in Lexington, KY, D.C. Arts Center, Evansville Art and History Museum in Indiana, Parachute Factory in Lexington, KY, and Zephyr Gallery in Louisville, KY. She has also exhibited work internationally at Chateau Orquevaux in Orquevaux, France, Press North in Queensland, Australia, and FireStation Gallery in Victoria, Australia.

Over the past decade Adrienne has worked numerous roles in a multitude of arts institutions, including preparator, development, curation, studio manager, education manager, gallery manager, and events director. Additionally, Adrienne’s artistic practice explores materialism and consumption through a lens of color theory and anthropology.

Currently Adrienne is an adjunct professor at University of Cincinnati DAAP and Art Academy of Cincinnati, as well as furthering research in her studio practice in Camp Washington, Cincinnati, OH.
