Learn how to build garments from the ground up. Students will study pattern cutting, hand and machine sewing, and the fundamentals of fit and structure. This course introduces a range of textiles and explores how materials influence design. Each participant will create one or more finished pieces while developing an understanding of contemporary fashion practice. This course encourages creative problem solving and thoughtful craftsmanship for anyone interested in fashion and design.
Required Materials: A sewing kit, a sketchbook, drawing pencils, colored pencils, and any notions (zippers, buttons, or hook and eyes) you may need. You will likely also need to bring in fabric after the first class session. The AAC has fabric available for the class, but we might not have your exact preference or required quantity available. Sewing machines and thread are provided, but if you’d prefer, you can bring in your own sewing machine for class sessions. You do not have to purchase the exact product nor from the same site in the linked examples.
