Film photography is a unique art form which captures detail in a way that other photography cannot—this is important when trying to capture someone’s character in a portrait. In this course, students will not only learn important film photography skills they can carry with them after the course concludes, but they will also learn the important practice of portraiture as a way of storytelling and as a part of narrative art. Students will develop their own prints in the darkroom and will have beautiful, unique photographs to add to their portfolio by the end of the course.
This course is for adults and teens of all skill levels. Students between the age of 13 and 17 must be registered to take the course with a parent or guardian and must be accompanied by the parent or guardian at each session. The guardian must also sign a Blanket Authorization Form. This will be sent in an email a week before the course begins and must be completed before the first session.
Required Materials: 35mm SLR camera with lens OR 35m reusable point-and-shoot camera and three rolls of 35 mm HP5 Plus film. You can find 35 mm cameras, lenses, and film on freestylephoto.com and bhphotovideo.com as well as at Dodd Camera in Cincinnati. You do not have to purchase from these sources, but they have many affordable options. The Art Academy of Cincinnati is not sponsored by B&H, Freestyle Photo & Imaging, Amazon, nor Dodd Camera.
If you cannot bring your own camera, there will be a limited number available to borrow during class time. To do this, please email engagement@artacademy.edu a week before the first day of class stating that you would like to reserve a camera. You will need to sign a waiver agreeing that you are financially responsible if the camera becomes damaged or lost in your care.
