In Regards to Nostalgia

10/29/21, 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The Art Academy of Cincinnati is pleased to present In Regards to Nostalgia, a group exhibition curated by Sso-Rha Kang, in which artists Aubrey Theobald, Jesse Ly, and Mark Albain explore the poetics and complexities of nostalgia’s many forms. Please join us for a reception on Final Friday, October 29, from 5 to 8pm.

About the exhibition:

In Regards to Nostalgia is a multimedia exhibition comprised of sculpture, painting, and photographic installations that examine how the past manifests in the present and how lived realities collide with our reimagining of what once was.

Mark Albain examines John Cage’s propagated night-blooming cereus plant as he captures its elusive bloom through photographs. Jesse Ly utilizes film-based photographic techniques to examine grief, love, and melancholia through site-specific installations and Aubrey Theobald’s intimate material study of everyday objects highlight location, empathy, and mourning practices through sculpture and painting.

About the artists:

Aubrey Theobald (she/her b. 1996) is an interdisciplinary artist currently practicing in Nashville, TN. Theobald received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Cincinnati DAAP with minors in Art History and Critical Visions (2018). Notably, Theobald became a Co-Founder & contributing member of Hot Take Press—a collaborative Risograph Artist book press (Cincinnati, OH, 2016), with individual publications held through Printed Matter and the New York Public Library. Theobald has held nomination as a Fulbright Grant Semi-Finalist in Berlin, Germany (2019) and recently spent March (2020) as an Artist-in-Residence at Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, VT).

Jesse Ly is an Asian-American artist originating from Dayton, OH. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with a minor in Art History and a certificate in Critical Visions from the University of Cincinnati’s college of DAAP. He has recently returned to Dayton, OH, where he is the Graphic Design and Photography Media Facilities Coordinator for Art & Design at the University of Dayton. Ly is a visual artist who primarily uses a photographic approach, exploring identity and connection through a recontextualizing of representation and its liminal qualities of existence.

Mark Albain is an Artist/Photographer living and working in Cincinnati, OH. His experience with the photographic medium lends itself to a sensitive presentation of passage and an interest in the language of connection and distance in the photographic space.
