Exhibition: The Big Reveal
02/26/16, 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
The Big Reveal explores the verbs conceal and reveal. Regional contemporary artists— including independent artists, university instructors and students from the area will create works that house aesthetic or conceptual secrets. This exhibition invites the viewer into the moment those secrets are betrayed.
To be revealed, something must first be concealed. What necessitates concealment? Animals and soldiers conceal themselves to evade enemies. Individuals may hide or obscure information to avoid consequences. Narrative story-tellers use concealment to suspend disbelief or to bait audiences. Ultimately the witness or viewer decides whether a work, action, or attempt at camouflage is truly undecipherable–or merely passable. The truly waylaid may only await “the big reveal”.
The visual arts can be read as a history of concealing and revealing. For centuries Western Art has emphasized verisimilitude, or the appearance of being real. In painting or sculpture, the achievement of a life-like image is still seen by many to be the ultimate achievement–truth (veritas) made physical.
Bold rejections of the picture plane by contemporary artists have given way to installations, performance works, internet art and multitudinous forms of glittering media that alternatively conceal and reveal the distinctions between reality and representation. The exhibition will push the boundaries of representation and abstraction, pairing highly rendered paintings with conceptual installation.
