Art Academy’s 151st Commencement Celebration

Due to current health and safety concerns the Art Academy of Cincinnati has re-imagined its planned 151st Commencement Ceremony and is restructuring the event as follows, to keep the health and safety of our school and larger community a priority:

The Art Academy of Cincinnati (AAC) invites the class of 2020 to return for an in-person graduation celebration on Saturday, October 31 from 10:00am to 4:00pm at the Carnegie in Covington, Kentucky. In conjunction with the exhibition “Same Again”, curated by Matt Distel. The day’s events will include the address from commencement speaker Tyra Patterson and professional photography sessions with Rhee Lightner for graduates and their guests from 10:00am – 1:00pm. The extended event will allow for AAC families to experience the exhibition and commencement festivities safely distanced and staggered throughout the day.

During the Art Academy’s 151st Commencement Celebration, artist and activist, Tyra Patterson will address the graduates at 10:00 am at the Carnegie; the speech will also be recorded and shared with graduates. Patterson’s story of being wrongly incarcerated has been shared worldwide from ABC News to the Guardian. Her remarkable journey has become larger than life with the recent ArtWorks mural, Time Saved vs. Time Served. Patterson’s story of resilience will champion the class of 2020 to take bold risks and realize their creative visions as they launch their careers as contemporary artists, designers, and writers.

In this spirit, the Art Academy of Cincinnati Alumni Association will recognize Jim Effler (BFA 1978) as the 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award honoree. Effler has gained a reputation for his whimsical illustrations for Cincinnati’s annual Bockfest celebration.

Cap and gowns are available for pickup from the Art Academy lobby the week of October 26 to wear to the celebration at the Carnegie.
