The Art Academy of Cincinnati Alumni Association is hosting the 31st Annual Minumental Exhibition, November 9-December 7.
This year’s exhibition will celebrate the Art Academy’s 150th Anniversary.
Original works of art no larger than 2″ by 2″ will be for sale to the public one night only. Participating artists are limited to Art Academy of Cincinnati faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
Minumental was conceived in 1987 by Professor Emeritus, Gary Gaffney and named by Jane Stanton, Academic Dean at the time. The first show was housed in a very small gallery in Eden Park and had 35 entries.
After 10 years, the submission number ballooned to nearly 1,000 works, and it now includes work from students, faculty, staff, and alumni. In that time, over $10,000 in prize money has been awarded and more than $10,000 has been sold.
In February of 2010, Gary publicly passed the torch to Denise Watson with regard to the planning and presenting. Waston was already a large part of the exhibition since 2005.
“It grew out of a classroom assignment that the students found to be fun. I had them working very big and very small. And the very small turned out to be very concentrated and intimate,” says Gaffney.
“I think that’s what draws a lot of people to the Minumental. To see how much an artist can cram into two square inches. And there’s a range of media that’s just amazing. From painting and drawing, to metalwork, wood, clay modeling, digital stuff, knitting, needlepoint. The other thing is that when you go to a show you normally expect to see a coherent body of work. Or something on the same theme. With Minumental, you’re going to have hundreds of pieces and they’re going to look as different as possible. You’re going to have a lot of choices and a lot of fun making those choices.”
In 2015 the exhibition was then passed to the Alumni Association, where it remains today. All proceeds from the exhibition will go to the Alumni Association Scholarship Award.
This award was first established in 2000 through the fundraising efforts of the Alumni Association. Full-time faculty members select the winners of this tuition scholarship. The recipients must be full-time sophomore students entering his or her junior year.
