“Inspired” is the word that might best describe The’Shima Craver’s work. The Senior Art Academy of Cincinnati Illustration major has been using her art to explore social issues in the world around her.

Through her combination of poetry and visual art, Craver confronts tough subjects by drawing on her own struggles while grappling with various issues.

“As an attempt to influence others to be more comfortable with their self, I have been exposing myself and or struggles through my work,” Craver wrote in her artist statement.

Recently, her work has evolved, pairing her powerful poetry with video pieces that help illustrate her words. Check out a brief Q&A with Craver below to learn more about her experience at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.

AAC Alumnus, Mitch Sipus will be visiting from Somolia to give a talk and workshop for the AAC Community.  A word from Mitch:

“While a student I was constantly needing to justify the value of my work to others, and I wanted it to have a social impact, but lacked the sufficient skills to do so.  I will tailor the workshop to give some direction and tools to students who have the same combination of ambition and limitation.   It will be relevant to students and/or faculty of any artistic or design discipline.”

City Beat Cover Photo Shot by AAC Senior, Catherine Viox

Catherine Viox, Senior Photography major at the AAC, has been interning at City Beat for quite some time.  Just last week she was given the opportunity to shoot the cover photo for the December 11th edition and jumped at the chance!  Here is Catherine’s reaction to the shoot:

“It’s amazing walking around the city and seeing my photo on a publication that is literally everywhere. I got to shoot my amazing boss, Jesse, reading in the snow surrounded by stacks of books. It was a fun and creative shoot and so nice to make the cover photo.  It really put into perspective how much work Jesse has to do every week to keep the magazine coming out as it should. As their head photographer, she has a lot of pressure on her shoulders. I hope within a few years I’ll be in her seat as she moves to bigger and better things.”

Congratulations, Catherine, on a job well done!
