A man of many achievements, Malcolm Grear, AAC alumnus, passed away on January 24, 2016. Grear will be remembered for his extraordinary impact on design education, in particular at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he was a devoted teacher and mentor for nearly four decades.

“We must pause for a moment to celebrate the life and work of AAC alumnus Malcolm Grear,” said John M Sullivan, President of the Art Academy of Cincinnati. “Many of you will remember Grear for the extraordinary graphics he created for the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta.”

One of America’s most award winning designers, Grear received awards from organizations including the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the International Center of Typographic Arts, and the Art Society of North America.

“I don’t — indeed can’t — teach students to be designers,” he often said to his students at RISD, “but I can and do teach attitudes and strategies that help them become designers.” To read more about Grear’s legacy click here.
