Although this may seem…incompatible after my jubilation over next week’s adventures, I am in something of a pickle:
This past weekend, I did nothing. I mean NOTHING. Homework doesn’t count. But I missed out on a really cheap opportunity to go to Venice (to Carnivale, too, but oh well about that part) and I felt bad. I mean, it’s Venice, for God’s sake! So I thought to myself that I should be doing something every second that I’m here, but the problem or “the pickle”, is that I’m running out of ideas for what to do that seems fun. I’ve already made arrangements to rectify the Venice mistake, but I’m trying to think of costless to low cost activities to fill my spare time. I’m strikingly bad at this, I’m realizing, because in Cincinnati, free time is like the two headed dragon that makes s’mores: they say it exists, but I only see it when I sleep. Any ideas? I would be eternally grateful for any and all answers to this question:
What would you do in your free time if you were in Florence, Italy for two months?
The thing that I regret about my time in Florence is that I wasn’t able to REALLY get involved in the
fabulous cultural life of Florence. The language barrier, of course, was a problem. I don’t think l learned
enough Italian; but, then again, you can’t spend all your time studying the language. You’re there to
study art! I came to Florence with visions of painting up a storm and at the same time frequenting the
“Taverna Medici” with an international cast of artists and poets, latter day Florentine beats who would
write a manifesto condemning commerce and elevating Art as the new “Golden Calf.”
In fact, at that time (Spring of 1985) in Florence there was a place called Caberet Voltaire, named
after the legendary Zurich club where Dada was born. But it was a bit too elegant and too expensive
for the likes of me. But there was a really great jazz club there called “Salt Peanuts”. Is it still there?
But I digress. If I had it to do over again I would try harder to meet and befriend as many Italian
artists and musicians as possible. I think it makes for a more meaningful experience. At that time the
Italian colleges and universities had student cafeterias called “mensa” and if you knew where they were
you could get a good meal for a cheap price (cinque mila lire…but now it’s Euros and probably expensive).
Anyway, if you went to a place like that, you might get to know some locals. Does Florence have a music
college? You know how CCM is such a great place for free concerts, maybe Florence has a comparable
institution. I regret that I never found out when I was there. But keep your eyes peeled for the Maggio
Musicale!

Another thing that I kind of regret is that I didn’t visit Viareggio at Carnivale. I don’t remember exactly why. We went to Venice well before the actual Fat Tuesday, so I could have made it to Viareggio (which is closer to Florence and much cheaper than Venice). I’ve experienced Mardi Gras in New Orleans a few times in the intervening years, and if I had known then what I know now I definitely would
have made it a point to get to Viarregio for Carnivale!

I was curious if you ever thought of changing the page layout of your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
