Student Life

Student activities support the AAC’s mission by celebrating the AAC’s unique student community and college. Throughout the year, various activities are organized by AAC Student Services, student organizations, AAC Ambassadors, and others to provide students opportunities to learn outside the classroom and to enjoy the company of peers, faculty, staff, visiting artists, and other featured guests. Student activities are student-led and are open to growth and flexibility to meet the needs of our evolving student community.

Examples of student activities include public talks by writers, designers, and artists; poetry readings and open mic nights; Halloween party; annual Student Pancake Breakfast; life skills workshops and cooking demos; Life After Art School Panel; lunches with the Dean; movie and game nights; and other events. As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves, the AAC will continue to create meaningful experiences for students that are in compliance with guidelines from all local, state, and federal health officials.

The AAC keeps students updated about events happening in the community at venues such as ArtsWave, ArtWorks, the Carnegie, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Cincinnati Museum Center, the Contemporary Arts Center, Ensemble Theatre, Findlay Market, Washington Park, and many other venues throughout Greater Cincinnati.

Even the most dedicated artist needs to get out of the studio once in a while.

New York Trip

Every year, AAC students and faculty members take a trip to New York city to explore the city’s museums and urban culture, and to take a closer look at contemporary art. Approximately 40 students participate in the NY Trip every year, which is usually held in March to coincide with the Armory Show.

AAC House Party

The Art Academy has hosted block parties on Jackson street in OTR. These have featured bands, poets, DJ’s, food, entertainers, and art vendors.

Stinkstock

Our mascot is Stinker the skunk, so in 2021 during a global pandemic, we started a streaming performance festival. We showcase students, staff, and faculty who make music, poetry, and about any kind of performative experience. Stinkstock happens in the spring, at the end of the semester. Performances are now held in Site1212.

Student Organizations

The AAC is home to a variety of student organizations across a large variety of interests, missions, and goals. Students will be introduced to current RSOs during Orientation, and student organizations will regularly promote events and activities they are hosting to the student community. Examples of active RSOs for the previous academic year include: AAC Queerspace, Social Impact Club, The Nontraditionals, Black Student Union, and Fellowship for Christian Artists, among others.

Students can petition Student Services for official recognition of an RSO by completing the RSO Application, available from the Dean of Student Services. This application will require information such as a mission statement, planned activities, membership roster, and a faculty/staff advisor. Once an RSO has been approved, the organization can promote its affiliation with the AAC, use AAC space for events, and request a budget.

Student Ambassadors

The Ambassador program is an integral component of AAC’s positive living-learning community. Ambassadors work in partnership with AAC Admissions, Development, and Student Services in a number of capacities. These key campus representatives engage prospective students and their families, current students, faculty, staff, and community partners. AAC Ambassadors assist with school-wide events throughout the year, such as coordinating New Student Orientation, Transfer Student Orientation, Commencement, Open Houses, National Portfolio Day, the Beaux Arts Ball, and the AAC House Party. Students interested in becoming AAC Ambassadors should contact the Dean of Student Services.
