UnCommon: A Master’s Thesis Exhibition”
Kirsten Anderson, Stacy Gibbons, Julie M. Jansen, and Rich Stolt present “UnCommon.” Four art educators enrolled in the Art Academy of Cincinnati’s Master of Arts in Art Education program will exhibit the culmination of their master’s work in the Pearlman and Convergys Galleries from July 26-July 30, 2010. The MAAE program is designed for certified art teachers, with a strong emphasis on studio achievement. The artists chose the title, “Uncommon,” to highlight the four unique approaches they take both conceptually and in the studio.
Kirsten Anderson, a native of Oxford, OH, graduated from Talawanda High School. She received a Bachelor of Science in Art from Miami University in 2005. During her years at Miami she studied visual art and art education, while competitively ice skating for the university. She was a member of the Division I synchronized skating team from 2001-2005, earning three national championship titles. In 2005, Anderson moved to Cincinnati and began her teaching career. The artist manipulates and reassembles historically gendered objects into more universal artworks that have a striking appeal. The iconography about these objects or “baggage” the viewer carries should not come first when viewing her pieces. Instead, a wide array of images should emerge. Anderson is interested in response and interpretation and allows imperfections to exist within the sculptures and installations. Stretching, tearing, bending, breaking and other flaws resulting from tension or other variables add details and evidence of the artist’s process. She would like to credit her mother, Jonne, for always being committed to art and art education and for being an inspiration. Anderson dedicates her artworks completed during her years at the Art Academy to her grandmother and best friend, Lucille, who passed away in June of 2006.
Stacy Gibbons was born and raised on the West side of Cincinnati and now resides on the East side. She graduated from Seton High School in 1997 and received a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education in 2001 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2005, both from the College of Mount St. Joseph. The 2010-2011 school year will mark her ninth year teaching high school. Three of those were at Purcell Marian High School, and this will be her sixth at New Richmond High School. Gibbons’ work is a voyage to find individual identity within the greater human experience. In particular, her recent work explores the ways we articulate our identities and emotions through the clothes we wear. As such, Gibbons constructs dresses that explore her personal history, relationship with the body, search for individuality and emotional response to the world through textures, symbolism and color.
Julie M. Jansen received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in visual art from the University of Dayton in 1997. In 2010 she was in a group show, “Transtienda,” at Laguanacazul Gallery in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2009 she was selected to participate in the UAMO Contemporary Art Festival in Munich, Germany where she created a site-specific installation for the show, “Perforation.” Jansen was an art educator with Mercer Elementary in the Forest Hills School District in Cincinnati, OH from 2000-2007, and during the 2007-2009 school years, she was the Junior School Art Specialist with Munich International School. In August 2010 she will relocate to Portland, OR where she will be an art educator with The International School. The objects Jansen uses in her work are fragments of everyday life: a pan from her parents’ kitchen, every paper towel she has used this summer to wipe her hands, used plastic beverage containers, weeds growing in areas that she frequents and cardboard that was piled in a neighbor’s driveway. Most of the objects Jansen has chosen are ordinary, quickly discarded and so engrained in our daily lives that we no longer see them. Through this work, she hopes that individuals will find beauty within the commonplace. Mapping is an act of coming to an understanding with the world, usually involving a specific location. By collecting objects and images from her daily landscape and using them in her work, Jansen engages in an unusual personal mapping process.
Rich Stolt grew up on the East side of Detroit, MI. The second eldest of four boys, he moved to Indiana in 1993, where he attended Anderson University and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1998. He, his wife and two children now live in Noblesville Indiana. He has worked as an art educator at Allisonville Elementary in Washington Township for the past 10 years. Stolt’s work focuses on place and time, not specific to any location or period, but rather to the beauty of decay and its critique on progress. The work is created with a combination of aerosol paint and acrylic paint on found objects. Although the process of using hand-cut stencils and aerosol paint are associated with street art, these materials also closely identify with decay. The artwork speaks to the loss significance of objects, perceived stability and the value of places.
