Mary Ran Gallery is pleased to host Anne Miotke: A Retrospective, an exhibition of over 30 watercolor paintings by Anne Miotke, who served as Professor of Fine Arts at the Art Academy of Cincinnati from 1974 to 1992. The exhibition which opened on September 24 and will be on view through October 23, 2010.
A prolific artist, Miotke has won many awards and honors for her luminous, photo-realist paintings and mastery of value. Working in a Realist mode provides the painter a format for the exploration of formal issues, particularly color, composition, value contrast, and figure/ground relationships. Saturated color and heightened value contrast are elements of Miotke's still-life paintings that allow the artist to capture the beauty of carefully observed simple objects of daily living. Distinguishing characteristics of Miotke's still-lifes include sharply directed light and subsequent shadows, the effects of unexpected juxtapositions and the way the objects themselves exist in the surrounding space.
Multiple layers of wash gradually establish hue, value constrast and the realistic presence of Miotke's chosen subject matter. The careful building of 20 to 40 layers of color in each painting and the formal qualities of both Classicism and Realism allow the painter to capture the sensual richness of everyday moments. Rather than seeking to escape the literal world, Miotke's work absorbs and celebrates it.
Anne Miotke holds both a Master of Fine Arts and a Master of Science in Painting from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and English from Mary Mount College in Milwaukee.
